621 will kick off the new exhibition season on First Friday, August 4th, 2006. This year we are planning to start the year with something a little different from our usual activities. Starting at 6pm we will have “Blank Walls” at the Gallery. We will have crayons and open frams mounted in the Gallery so that our new members can fill the empty walls because without their support that’s all we would ever have. Blank Walls is a membership drive to help support the Gallery and raise money for the upcoming exhibition seaons. All membership dollars go to support the exhibitions and other events at 621. We are planning to bring you a new and outstanding exhibition each month next year with an opening on each First Friday. Come and show your support, listen to some live music, draw on the walls and become a member!

Beginnings and Endings
Beginnings and Endings
June 6th - 27th, 2008

The 621 Gallery explores the intensity and nuance of the human form. Though different in visual composition, the work of Tannaz Farsi, Elissa Cox and Petra Kralickova, depicts the possessive landscape of human emotions that collide in a vortex of desire, dislocation and longing. Individually, this can be seen in the intensity of each artist’s focal engagement by the juxtaposition of skin as a porous structure that filters memory and draws out the physicality of the body into an abstracted landscape. Where Farsi juxtaposes the invisible against the physical, Cox’s landscapes surge with buoyant energy, infused with forms both familiar and imagined. Quintessentially, Kralickova’s abstract installations highlight the physical and psychological body in moments of tension and respite. Collectively, the exhibition echoes the poetics of a body that is at once filled with vigor and overtaken by a sense of fragility that defines the human experience.

CURRENT EXHIBITION & EVENTS

Unseen and Undead, September 5th-26th, 2008
Artist Talk - Carrie Ann Baade, Thurs Sept 4th, 5:30-7:30 pm
Opening First Friday September 5th, 6-9 pm

In September, The 621 Gallery presents Unseen and Undead, a haunting exhibition of ghosts, zombies, and mystical encounters. Mark Hosford explores mankind’s fascination with the unknown through drawing and animation. Hosford’s work touches on actual locations surrounded by myth and legend as well as the ways people explore the unknown through ceremony and narrative. Wee Lit TAN reflects on contemporary art’s fascination with the “underdog” in an anecdotal and personal manner. Robert McCann uses ghosts and zombies to characterize the presence of binary opposition in our culture and to explore themes of abstraction, dynamism, and consumption. Carrie Ann Baade explores the complexity of the human tradition through myths and monsters. Baade’s unique visions and complex, imaginative portraiture conflates themes from art history and literature in an original way.

In the Nan Boynton Memorial Gallery, Binod Shrestha re-contextualizes the natural elements by concentrating on the stories within the materials. Binod explores the body in relation to the natural world and further traces themes of myth, identity, and memory through his large-scale installations, drawing, and video.

HISTORY

The 621 Gallery was orignally established in 1981 and later incorporated in 1989 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The governing force of the 621 Gallery consists of a Board of Directors with officers that rotate yearly. These members include artists, faculty members from Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, and Florida A & M University, and members of the Tallahassee Community that are interested in contemporary art.

The 621 Gallery is committed to providing contemporary art, artists, and ideas to the Tallahassee Area and well as the North Florida and South Georgia regions. We rely heavily on volunteers from our board, members, and art community. Without them, the gallery would not be able to carry on. Please join us by becoming a member, supporter, artist or volunteer, and help bring the best in contemporary art to our community.

NAN BOYNTON MEMORIAL GALLERY

Nan Boynton Memorial Gallery is located within The 621 Gallery. The Gallery is dedicated to the memory of Nan Boynton, original founder of Railroad Square and 621. Her vision of a community of artists living and working together became Railroad Square, the commercial and residential park in Tallahassee devoted to the arts. Ms. Boynton passed away in 2002. Her son and daughter carry on the business of Railroad Square, and have donated space for 621 in honor of their mother’s vision.
